History of the Society of Breast Imaging

The organizational meeting of the SBI was held in Boston, Massachusetts on April 24, 1985. The six founding radiologists were Carl D’Orsi, Stephen Feig, Marc Homer, Harold Moskowitz, Myron Moskowitz and Edward Sickles. The objectives of the SBI, as listed in the articles of organization, are to:

1.      improve and disseminate knowledge in the field of breast imaging,
2.      improve the quality of medical education in the field of breast imaging,
3.      foster research in all aspects of breast imaging,
4.      provide a medium for the exchange of ideas among professionals involved with breast imaging,
5.      provide meetings for presentation and discussion of papers and the dissemination of knowledge in the area of breast imaging, and
6.      establish a channel for publication of scientific reports in the field of breast imaging.

Initially, membership in the society was limited to Fellows and was by invitation, with membership based on contributions to the field of breast imaging. From 1985 to 1990 the society grew to 75 active Fellows. In 1991, a general membership category was established. Requirements for general membership are certification by the American Board of Radiology or American Osteopathic Board of Radiology and an active interest in breast imaging. Radiologists outside the United States who have their country’s equivalent to ABR or AOBR certification who have an active interest in breast imaging, or medical physicists who are certified by the ABR or the American Association of Physicists in Medicine (AAPM) in either radiological physics or diagnostic radiological physics and have an active interest in breast imaging are also eligible. The establishment of a general membership was a natural evolution, which provided an opportunity for the Society to increase its influence and effectiveness in scientific, professional and political interactions, as well as in educational activities. Under the new structure of the society, General Members that meet specific qualifications may apply to be Fellows of the Society after one year. In the spring of 1995 an Affiliate Member category was established for registered Radiologic Technologists. Membership within this category is constantly growing, and there are now over 100 members.Prior to 1993, the Fellows of the Society had scheduled their meetings to coincide with the Annual Meeting of the Radiological Society of North American (RSNA). Fellows Meetings are now held annually at RSNA and at the SBI Biennial Post-graduate Course.
