Professional Bio
Bonnie N. Joe, MD, PhD, is a Professor in Residence and Chief of Breast Imaging in the Department of Radiology and Biomedical Imaging at the University of California, San Francisco. Dr. Joe graduated from the University of California at Berkeley with a Bachelor of Science degree in Bioengineering in 1990. Dr. Joe subsequently completed her PhD in Electrical and Computer Engineering/Biomedical Engineering from Carnegie Mellon University, Pittsburgh in 1995. She obtained her medical degree from the University of Pittsburgh in 1997, and completed her residency in Diagnostic Radiology at Mallinckrodt Institute of Radiology, Barnes Jewish Hospital in St. Louis, followed by a fellowship in Magnetic Resonance Imaging at Mallinckrodt Institute of Radiology. Dr. Joe subsequently underwent additional fellowship training in Breast Imaging at UCSF under Dr. Edward Sickles.
Dr. Joe has been a faculty member in the Department of Radiology and Biomedical Imaging at UCSF over 20 years. She leads a vibrant and continually expanding Division of Breast Imaging at UCSF which boasts 7 active Fellows of the Society of Breast Imaging. Dr. Joe is a leader in advancing imaging-based approaches to breast cancer diagnosis, earlier detection, and reduction of disease recurrence and improved survival. She is a long-time collaborator with breast MRI expert Dr. Nola Hylton in developing advanced imaging biomarkers for monitoring neoadjuvant treatment response.
Dr. Joe is active in professional radiology organizations including serving on the Board of Trustees for the RSNA Research and Education Foundation, the 2024 Society of Breast Imaging Program Planning Committee, Deputy Editor for the journal Radiology: Imaging Cancer, and member of the American College of Radiology Screening Leadership Group. Dr. Joe was recently awarded the 2023 RSNA Honored Educator Award and is a Fellow of the Society of Breast Imaging.
