The Resident and Fellow Section (RFS) is comprised of Members-in-Training of the Society of Breast Imaging. We invite medical students who are interested in radiology, radiology residents, and breast imaging fellows to complimentary SBI membership.

RFS Case of the Month

The SBI Resident and Fellow Committee is pleased to present the RFS Case of the Month Series! This online offering highlights important breast imaging findings on an interesting and unique case monthly. The series will allow readers to work through a case developed by trainees and their mentors to increase and solidify their understanding of breast imaging essentials. The Wendell Scott Research Award is presented to the most outstanding abstract submitted by a breast imaging fellow to the Symposium. The recipient of the 2025 Wendell Scott Research Award is Lin Gu, MD, for her abstract, "Prevalence of Acute and Delayed Contrast Reactions with Multiple Exposures to Contrast Enhanced Mammography – Experience from the TOCEM Trial."

Dr. Gu is a breast imaging fellow at UPMC Magee-Womens Hospital. She graduated from Saint Louis University's diagnostic radiology residency program. She is expected to join the breast imaging section at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis upon completion of her fellowship.

The Gerald D. Dodd Jr., Research Award is presented to the most outstanding abstract submitted by a medical student or resident to the Symposium. The recipient of the 2025 Gerald D. Dodd Jr., Research Award is Jenifer Chisom Ogu, BS, for her abstract, "Differences in Patient Acceptance of Artificial Intelligence Use in the Interpretation of Mammograms."

Ms. Ogu is a fourth-year medical student at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical School. She developed an interest in imaging during her first year of medical school, and since has been committed to pursuing a career as a radiologist. Chisom has served as president of her medical school’s Radiology Interest Group, helping to connect students to mentors, research, and educational opportunities within the department. Her research has focused on pediatric radiology and artificial intelligence in imaging. Chisom is also passionate about medical education, women’s health, and promoting diversity within the medical community. After graduating in May 2025, Chisom will begin her diagnostic radiology residency and hopes to specialize in breast imaging.

The International Abstract Award is presented to the most outstanding international abstract submitted to the Symposium. The recipient of the 2025 International Abstract Award is Bohwa Choi, PhD, for her abstract, "Optimizing Recall Rates for Screening Mammography in Korean Women: A Retrospective Study Tailored by Breast Density and Age."

Dr. Choi is a Clinical Assistant Professor in the Department of Radiology at the National Cancer Center, Republic of Korea. Her expertise lies in breast imaging, oncologic radiology, and advanced diagnostic techniques for breast cancer detection. She earned her Doctor of Medicine (MD) and PhD in Radiology from Konkuk University School of Medicine, Korea, then completed her radiology residency and fellowship in breast imaging at Konkuk University Hospital, where she developed specialized skills in breast cancer diagnostics. She is an active member of the Korean Society of Radiology, the Korean Society of Breast Imaging, and the Korean Society for Breast Screening. She has participated in several research projects and has published in peer-reviewed journals, focusing on advancing imaging methodologies and improving breast cancer detection.

The Electronic Abstract Award is presented to the highest-scoring abstract submitted to the Symposium. The recipient of the 2025 Electronic Abstract Award is Richard Sharpe, Jr., MD, for his abstract, "Understanding the Method of Detection (MOD) in Breast Cancer: Evolution, Current Practices, and Common Questions."

Dr. Sharpe completed undergraduate, medical and business schools, as well as a medical internship at Georgetown University in Washington, DC. He subsequently completed a diagnostic radiology residency at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital where he served as chief resident, and a breast imaging fellowship at the Harvard Medical School and Beth Israel Deaconess Hospital. He served for the next seven years as a breast radiologist at Kaiser Permanente in Denver, CO before joining Mayo Clinic Arizona in 2020. Dr. Sharpe has published and presented broadly on breast cancer detection and intervention, healthcare utilization, quality improvement, healthcare innovation, education, improving the patient experience, informatics, implementation science, and care integration.

The International Electronic Abstract Award is presented to the highest-scoring abstract submitted to the Symposium by an international presenter. The recipient of the 2025 International Electronic Abstract Award is Vitor Chiarini Zanetta, MD, for his abstract, "Decoding Benign Breast Lesions on Neoadjuvant Chemotherapy: Essential Magnetic Resonance Imaging Insights for Breast Radiologists."

Dr. Zanetta is a breast imaging radiologist from Brazil, currently practicing at Dasa (Diagnósticos da América S.A.) and Fleury Group. He completed his specialized training in breast imaging at the University of São Paulo (USP). He is one of the coordinators of the Breast Imaging Study Group at the São Paulo Society of Radiology, which aims to bring together radiologists to discuss cases and exchange information in the field of breast imaging, supporting the education of radiologists in training as well as more experienced colleagues. With extensive experience in interpreting imaging studies and performing image-guided procedures, Dr. Zanetta is deeply committed to advancing the early detection and diagnosis of breast cancer.
